An interactive multi-modal transport map to promote active travel
Requirement
Ayrshire Roads Alliance, the public sector partnership led by East Ayrshire Council, delivers shared Council roads and transportation services across East and South Ayrshire. Through their Active Travel Hubs, developed in partnership with Sustrans, they promote active travel across the region. They do this by providing accompanied cycle rides and walks, bicycle safety checks, cycling skills sessions and personal travel planning. The parent company of gi Perspective, Lovell Johns were awarded a contract in 2018 to develop an online interactive multi-modal travel map.
Solution
We proposed a custom Google Maps-based solution as the most practical approach for displaying the required walking, cycling and bus routes over the same road network.
The recommended leisure walks across the region are accurately plotted against the base map features and give a total length in metres and name of description where available. The Urban Walking Planner also makes use of Google Directions facility to build a custom walk.
The map provides a wealth of cycling information; cycle climbs varying from Easy to Challenging; Routes, including those aimed at Mountain Biking; Repair Centres and Local and National Sustrans routes. For the bus user, the map displays routes and their operator across the region, also links to timetables and bus stops with times of next departure.
Result
The Active Travel Hub user is able to launch either an Ayr or Kilmarnock branded map, then choose between the modes of sustainable travel on offer. The solution is now available to view online.
gi Perspective supports the project for updates and maintenance through an annual Support Agreement.
