Using Census data to map service Provision for BALTIC
Requirement
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is a major international centre for contemporary art located on the South bank of the River Tyne at the foot of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Their Strategic Management Group approached gi Perspective with a request for specialist mapping services to assist with strategy and to help deliver learning and engagement in education across the Region.
Solution
BALTIC were looking to commission a piece of work to create 12 maps of the various categories of educational establishment against recent Census data in the form of Indexes of Multiple Deprivation (IMD).
gi Perspective consulted with the Head of Learning and Civic Engagement to agree the scope of work, deliverables and fixed costs. A GIS consultant then carried out:
- geocoding and indexing of education establishments
- collation and categorisation of Census IMD data
- map design and graphic finishing
Result
From receipt of client data the final set of maps were delivered to schedule and budget in just six weeks. The maps were delivered as high resolution PDFs for presentation purposes. Vicky Sturrs, Head of Learning and Civil Engagement at the BALTIC, commented:
‘This is a great way for us to map a baseline, understand where we’re working against that area’s social deprivation indexes and start to show a story of change and impact. So well received thank you! I’ve been sending your contacts on to people too! ’.
