GPX (GPS Exchange Format)

A GPX file (also known as GPS Exchange Format) is an XML-based file format used to describe tracks, routes and waypoints. It is a common format used in GPS devices and mobile apps for the storage, import and export of locational data used in outdoor leisure activities such as walking, running and cycling.

GPX is essentially the digital equivalent of routes and associated locations marked on a paper map. They can be recorded using coordinates from a GPS device as the activity is carried out (such as recording the route of a run via a smart watch). The open format can store other related information such as time, elevation and heart-rate depending on the software used.

Such data can then be displayed over an online map or used to create digital graphs. As it is a common format, it can be used to export or import locational data via different devices and software such as Google Maps.
